Bernard van Orley, also called Barend or Barent van Orley, Bernaert van Orley or Barend van Brussel, was a Flemish Northern Renaissance painter and draughtsman, and also a leading designer of Brussels tapestry and stained glass. He is counted among a group of painters belonging to the Romanism school of painting, who has not been given enough attention by the general public. On 23 May 1518 he was appointed as the official court painter to the Regent of the Netherlands Margarete of Austria. In this position, he became the head of an important workshop, making him one of the first entrepreneurial artists in Northern Europe....
