Rubber Soul (UK), The Beatles >
The Beatles' sixth British album Rubber Soul, released in December of 1965, is a masterpiece. The original US version was kind of a rip-off(substituting I've Just Seen a Face and It's Only love for Drive My Car, Nowhere Man, What Goes On and If I Needed Someone for no reason) but the UK version was the real album in mine, and many other fans' view. The blending of acoustic guitars with rock and roll works perfectly here. Rhythm guitarist John Lennon rocks with the opening Drive My Car, Wait(which has some help from Paul on the track), The Word and the closing acoustic tinged rocker Run For Your Life. In addition, he showcases his more acoustic side with the excellent Norwegian Wood(with lead guitarist George Harrison's excellent sitar work) and Girl. Also, he contributed the ballad In My Life(which was recently covered by the late great Johnny Cash on his farewell album). Bassist Paul McCartney's contributions are the melodic You Won't See Me, the ballad Michelle and the fast acoustic rocker I'm Looking Through You. Harrison contributes his best songs up to this point with Think For Yourself and If I Needed Someone which both have great electric guitar playing by the Quiet Beatle himself. George, John and Paul showcase their beautiful harmonies on Nowhere Man which is arguably the album's best track. Drummer Ringo Starr sings What Goes On showing that he was one of few drummers in rock history who could sing and play drums simultaneously. I discovered this album on the radio in 1987 when the Beatles CDs first came out and were playing them in their entirety on the radio station. Highly recommended!
