Ancient Egypt Timeline >
History begins with the names of kings written in their tombs, and hints of events from rock inscriptions and ivory and wooden labels. Kings and their Great Royal Wives are buried in large complexes built of mud-brick, surrounded by the smaller tombs of their courtiers. The first king of united Egypt is traditionally called Menes or Narmer. There is evidence for long distance trade with Western Asia and Nubia. Vessels of stone and pottery, slate palettes, and objects of wood, bone, stone and shell from this period can be seen in the ROM Galleries.
