Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare >
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is a tale of two teenage "star-cross'd lovers" who fall in love despite the ongoing feud between their two families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Friar Lawrence, a Franciscan monk, hopes to reconcile the feuding families through the union of their two children in marriage, but when Romeo is forced to kill Tybalt (Juliet's cousin) in a duel, the friar's well-intentioned plan begins to unravel. After a tragic miscommunication, Romeo and Juliet commit suicide, each believing the other to be dead. One of Shakespeare's most popular plays, Romeo and Juliet has inspired numerous film adaptations including an Academy Award winning film directed by Franco Zeffirelli (1968) and a popular 1996 version starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.
