Scipio Africanus, Defeated Hannibal  >  new window

Scipio Africanus was a Roman General who conquered Hannibal, 202 BC, in the Punic Wars. Scipio followed his father into battle during the 2nd Punic War in Spain and was lauded for saving the elder's life during Battle of Ticinus. After his father's death ca. 210, he was elected proconsul in Spain and went on to conquer New Carthage and later defeat Hasdrubal, brother of Hannibal, at the Battle of Beacula in Spain. He then set his sights on Africa. With an army requiring 400 transport ships, he traveled to Africa where he lured Hannibal out of Italy to defeat him in 202 B.C. at the Battle of Zama. Scipio returned to Spain and earned the moniker 'Africanus' for the country he conquered. Late in life he revealed his generosity of spirit when he prevented the ruin of exiled Hannibal by Rome.

In 189 B.C. Scipio defeated King Antiochus in Asia and was later charged of accepting a bribe in exchange for granting peace to Antiochus. Scipio responded to the charge by leaving Rome for Liternum where he lived modestly until his death in ca 184 B.C
