In the last years of the sixteenth century, the Spanish troops were driven out of the Republic. The next aim was to expand to the south. In 1600, Maurice left with 15,000 men for the port of Dunkirk - home port of the Spanish privateers who were wreaking havoc on Dutch trade. On the beach at Nieuwpoort in Flanders, he ran into a Spanish army. A battle ensued.

The Battle of Nieuwpoort in 1600 demonstrated the military supremacy that the Dutch Republic had gained in the war with Spain. For the first time ever in a field battle - either in the Netherlands or outside - the enemy had been beaten, which made this battle especially significant.
